To celebrate the Life and Death of Edgar Allan Poe, VOLT Restaurant has teamed up with Maryland’s Big Read, the Weinberg Center, Frederick Reads, and Maryland Public Television to host a special Poe-themed Birth and Death dinner the night of the Joshua Kane performance.

Pre-theater dinner seating is available at 5:30 p.m. and post-theater dinner seating is available at 9:30 p.m. In partnership with the Weinberg Center and Frederick County Libraries, dinner guests can also enjoy discount theater ticket prices offered for a 2-for-1 price of $25. Along with theater tickets, guests will also receive an anthology of Poe’s works courtesy of The Big Read. To round off the evening, the Marriott hotels are offering over-night guests discounted room at all of the Frederick Marriotts.

Theater and dinner reservations can be made by calling VOLT at 301-696-VOLT (8658) or by visiting voltrestaurant.com.

Joshua Kane will also present a 10 AM performance titled Edgar Allan Poe’s Tales of Terror. The show is appropriate for Grades 6 – 8. Tickets for the 10 AM show are $6 and $5 and can be purchased by calling the box office at 301.600.2828

Take a left turn off the cliff of insanity as Kane performs dramatic readings from such tales as The Raven, The Tell-Tale Heart, Hop-Frog, The Masque of the Red Death and more! This performance is punctuated with lively anecdotes about the author and his swift descent into madness.

“Remember how much fun it was to be told tales of terror as a child? You can recapture that delight with an evening with Joshua Kane. He has revived the great tradition of stage storytelling. He needs no props, just a stream of good stories and his own considerable talent. I was astonished and enthralled and reinvigorated. You will be too.”—Ramsey Campbell, World Fantasy Award-winner; author of The Last Voice They Hear

This event is presented in conjunction with the National Endowment for the Arts’ Big Read. The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest. The Big Read gives communities the opportunity to come together to read, discuss, and celebrate one of 30 selections from United States and world literature. The Big Read initiatives will focus on the collected works of Edgar Allan Poe and activities will take place throughout the month of October 2009. This event will be one of many hosted around the Frederick Community.

More about Joshua Kane

It has been suggested that if you dropped Orson Welles, Artemus Gordon and the Count of Monte Cristo into a blender, the inevitable result would be Joshua Kane. Raised in an illegal boarding house and obsessed from an early age with books, bullwhips, spoken word, knife-throwing and the theatre, Kane was destined for a career on the stage or in the state penitentiary.

A classically trained actor, Kane has studied with such theatrical luminaries as Stella Adler, Bobby Lewis, Marcel Marceau, and Patsy Rodenburg. His versatility as a character actor has led to a wide range of theatre credits, including the Pirate King in Pirates of Penzance, John Dickinson in 1776, Nat in I’m Not Rappaport, and Friar Francis in Much Ado About Nothing. A member of Actors Equity Association, Kane has played limited runs at off-Broadway’s historic Lambs Theatre and Neighborhood Playhouse.

Since 1991 Kane has run his own theatrical production company that exclusively produces theatrical, corporate and private events that shamelessly feature Joshua Kane, because like Shakespeare’s Bottom he wants to play all the parts. His fascination with the old-time radio dramas of Orson Welles and Vincent Price inspired Kane to reinvent “Theatre of the Mind” for a new generation.

An international touring Artist, Kane original works include Gothic at Midnight, his award-winning tribute to the Masters of the Macabre; Borders of the Mind, an evening of psychic phenomena; his one-man adaptation of The Time Machine, H. G. Wells’ immortal classic; A Force of Nature: or How I survived My Jewish American Family for the 92nd Street Y’s Oral Tradition Series; and Shakespeare’s Murderers, Madmen & Kings. He also offers dynamic creativity and voice workshops. At the 1998 Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston, SC, Gothic at Midnight was a smash critical and popular success. Kane has performed to great acclaim at the World Horror Con and Dragon Con in Atlanta.

Kane’s vocal skills have been used to great effect as the narrator of Saint Saens “Carnival of the Animals” and Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf.” He has a lively career as a voice over artist, with commercial spots ranging from the Vienna Boys’ Choir, recruitment spots for the C.I.A. , Nickleodeon’s Jimmy Neutron video game and the much-talked about 2007 Sony Playstation 3 release, “The Darkness;” from Comcast’s “Voice of God” to a headmaster Akahito for the demo of Gene Roddenberry’s feature-length animated film Starpoint Academy. He played the lead role of Robert Louis Stevenson in Little People, a radio production conceived and directed by Jad Abumrad for New York Public Radio’s Radio Lab, which has enjoyed frequent rebroadcasts since its debut. He also writes and performs original comic verse (including a performance on Colorado public radio).
